Wando Mount Pleasant Library in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is a striking 40,000 ft² civic landmark designed by LS3P and built by M.B. Kahn, emerging in 2019 as the first of five new branches funded by a 2014 referendum. Anchored at the intersection of Carolina Park Blvd and Park Ave, the building’s façade artfully combines indigenous Savannah-moss-colored brick, expansive glazing, and Longboard cladding, evoking the natural textures of tree bark and suggesting the turning pages of books. A dynamic oculus skylight bathes the children’s area in soft daylight, creating playful reading niches framed by outdoor views; adjacent paterae pop-out window seats further merge interior learning spaces with the surrounding landscape. Inside, the library supports modern, digital-first programs with a 250-seat auditorium, recording and editing labs, makerspaces, a teen gaming lounge, and an automated materials handling system that blends transparency with high-tech functionality. The design thoughtfully aligns programmatic ‘live’ zones with public streets to animate the façade and create a sense of civic engagement.
