With the increase in California wildfires driven by prolonged droughts and continuous elevated temperatures. This has placed building safety in this region under intense scrutiny. The state’s Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) regulations and stringent building codes require construction materials that not only meet aesthetic and performance demands but also provide proven fire-resistant properties to protect lives, property, and infrastructure.

Rebuilding California

Amid California’s devastating loss of homes in recent years, there are also stories of resilience and rebuilding. Jun & Robert Lujan, homeowners in Pasadena, were able to rebuild just months after the Altadena fire destroyed their home, becoming the first homeowners in the area to receive occupancy permits.

Jun, a designer herself, took immediate action and started submitting permits just days after the fires, ready to move forward with the rebuilding process. Having just remodeled their home in 2020, the Lujan’s wanted to take every precaution possible to ensure the home could withstand any potential future issues. Using a variety of non-combustible materials such as Longboard aluminum, stucco exteriors, and metal components throughout.

Technical Features for Fire Safety

Longboard building products provide a solution for fire-safe building design in California. Unlike other common building materials, such as wood or vinyl, aluminum does not ignite, burn, or contribute fuel to a fire. This fundamental material advantage allows Longboard to meet California’s strictest codes while enhancing long-term resilience and occupant safety.

  • Extruded Aluminum Products: Does not burn, char, or contribute fuel to fire events
  • Reduced Flame Spread: Unlike wood, aluminum remains dimensionally stable at elevated temperatures without releasing flammable gases
  • Elimination of Fuel Load Risk: Reduces combustible content in a building envelope, directly lowering the risk of fire propagation
  • ASTM E2768-11 (Extended Duration Surface Burning): Achieves Class 1 Fire Rating with third-party validation
  • Third-Party Tested: ASTM E2768-11, Class-1 fire rating
  • Thermal Performance: Aluminum cladding enhances while resisting ignition and flame spread

  • Protects structural assemblies by reducing radiant heat transfer to underlying combustible substrates
  • Maintains performance in California’s coastal, wildfire-prone, and high-wind regions
  • Offers rear-ventilated rain-screen (BV/D) capability, improving moisture management and fire-safe wall design

California Compliant

Longboard’s aluminum cladding eliminates the risk of siding materials fueling a fire. This is critical in WUI-mandated construction, where siding, soffits, and screens must demonstrate resistance to direct flame and radiant heat exposure.

California’s fire safety challenges demand robust, code-compliant building solutions that eliminate combustible fuel sources while ensuring multifunctional performance. Longboard’s extruded aluminum systems present a proven, non-combustible, and environmentally responsible building envelope strategy.

Backed by rigorous certifications, Longboard enables architects, developers, and municipalities to align with California’s fire-safe building code strategies while enhancing sustainability, occupant health, and long-term resilience.
