California English opened its doors in 2024 and brought an experiment — one rooted in flavors, shade, and atmosphere. Helmed by chef Richard Blais, the restaurant became something rare for the district: a cultural anchor, a place where residents, and travelers could gather around a table.

A Stage for California Living
The patio became the design team’s front porch. Sprawling and sunlit, it asked for both openness and protection. The rhythm of beams overhead casts shifting shadows through the day, a reminder of sunlight’s choreography across California landscapes.
Stepping inside feels the same, a continuation. Matching ceiling treatments blur the line between exterior and interior, creating a single environment of ease. The transition is subtle, but profound. Patrons move not between two worlds, but within one continuous Californian English fusion of a narrative, from public patio to an intimate dining room.
Crafting Privacy with Personality
California English required boundaries, but not barriers. Here, fences, gates, and screens became more than functional elements, they became spatial punctuation. Slim vertical lines provide comfort without concealment, offering gentle separation between groups of friends while framing the sky, with sunlight pouring in.
Filtered light animates the restaurant throughout the day, giving screens a performative quality. The boundaries, in fact, are what invite intrigue.
The design team’s choice of finish, a light bamboo palette realized through aluminum cladding, was a pragmatic one. Restaurants demand materials that can endure weather, and time. Putting that together with the clients and architects’ want of warmth, and something that would speak to California’s indoor-outdoor ease, Longboard became the obvious choice.
For Sorrento Mesa, California English is more than a dining destination. It underscores a shift in how people imagine community. On weekends, families and travelers gather here. On weekdays, workers take their lunch in the shade rather than under fluorescent lights. By blending hospitality with context, it proves that even a corporate neighborhood can become a civic one, a place that feels as though you left home, but not the warmth of it.
