When it comes to high-performance construction, every transition in the building process matters, especially where the wall meets the roof. At Longboard, we’re always looking for smart ways to combine energy efficiency, durability, and aesthetic precision.
One effective approach involves extending Rockwool insulation above the wall plate and integrating a ledger-supported soffit system. This small but powerful detail helps create a continuous thermal barrier while maintaining airflow through the roof.
Extending Rockwool for Better Continuity
At the top of the wall sits the top plate, with the attic space above typically filled with blown-in insulation. By extending rigid Rockwool insulation slightly above the top plate, but not all the way to the roof sheathing, you maintain continuous insulation while allowing ventilation through the roof system.
This technique minimizes thermal bridging, supports consistent energy performance, and protects against moisture buildup, all key factors in long-term envelope durability.
Installing the Soffit System
With the insulation in place, a ledger board is added on top of the Rockwool. This creates a secure framing surface for the soffit installation and maintains a clean architectural line.
This detail was reviewed and approved by the local building inspector, a great reminder that collaboration between builders and inspectors ensures innovative techniques meet both design and code requirements.
Structurally Supporting the Soffit
The soffit framing connects between the ledger and subfascia, spanning roughly 18 inches, well within the structural requirements for attachment spacing. A few additional blocking pieces can be added for reinforcement, ensuring a smooth, stable soffit installation.Â
This simple, thoughtful approach provides both structural integrity and design precision.
